Building Retro-Commissioning

Retro-commissioning is the process of commissioning an existing building and often involves:

  • Gathering of available documentation
  • Developing current Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR)
  • Analyzing existing systems for problems and opportunities
  • Design & oversight of system repairs or changes
  • Verification and documentation of system repairs or changes

Retro-commissioning building systems has been documented to provide a number of cost effective benefits including:

  • Annual Energy Savings (kW & kWH)
  • Maintenance Cost Savings
  • Improved Thermal Comfort
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality

A 2009 study conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found the following benefits of retro-commissioning within a sample size of 561 buildings:

  • 16% Median Whole-Building Energy Savings
  • Median Cost Savings of $0.20/SF-YR (based on Median Retro-Commissioning Cost of $0.30/SF)

Criterium-Williams Engineers is an experienced retro-commissioning (RCX) service provider and is an approved service provider for the CLEAResult/CPS Whole Building Optimization program. Often our study fees and implementation costs are completely covered by the Whole Building Optimization program with no expense to the building owner/operator.
