ASHRAE Building EQ

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) created the Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program to provide information on a building’s energy use.  The bEQ program is unique amongst building energy rating programs in that it provides both an As Designed rating and In Operation performance rating.  This allows the building owner a snapshot of how efficiently the building is operating against how efficient it was designed to operate.  The bEQ program is designed to complement other green rating systems by focusing on energy efficiency without compromising indoor environmental quality.

The As Designed rating has the following characteristics:

  • Predicted Energy Use Intensity (EUI) is based on results from an energy model of the building with standardized inputs
  • Rating is determined by comparing predicted EUI against a baseline median EUI

The In Operation rating has the following characteristics:

  • Includes ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit
  • Determines EUI based on the building’s metered energy use for the preceding 12-18 months
  • Rating is determined by comparing measured EUI against a normalized median EUI determined using methodology from ASHRAE Standard 100, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings.

Go to additional project requirements and up to date information about the rating program.

Our team of licensed Professional Engineers can help you determine how efficiently your building is operating by providing an ASHRAE bEQ rating.
